Show Notes:

  • Ann Dolin’s work ethic and willingness to put in her time are two habits that have helped her achieve success in her life.
    • Her passion for her calling sets her apart from everyone else.
  • Ann sets aside time each Sunday to plan her upcoming week. She confirms all of her appointments and makes sure that there is time for everything.
  • Planning ahead is helpful and helps reduce students’ stress over breaks.
  • Kids don’t like being nagged.
    • Sometime parents are more motivated about children’s schoolwork than they are, but they have to be careful not to nag.
  • Ask children what their priorities are when they come home from school.
    • Don’t ask if they have homework or a test to study for.
    • Children think about what they have to get done when parents ask what their priorities are.
  • It is important to look at grades as an indicator of how a child is doing in a class, but the significance varies by class.
    • Cumulative classes like math are especially important to pay attention to because the subject material builds on itself making it harder for a kid with a weak foundation to pull through.
  • A child might procrastinate a lot or be disorganized or can’t study so these are important factors to examine too.
  • Parents should set a routine for young kids to do their homework because they are much less likely to push back if they know what to expect.
  • Timers can help kids who are perfectionists or kids who fear a daunting assignment to get their work done.
    • The timer must be set for a short burst of time (no more than 30 minutes) that the child can do to get over the hump of intimidation, and then they can have a rest period.
    • We are more productive over short bursts of time.
  • The sweet spot of homework for high school students is about 1.5 hours.
    • However, homework is not super effective for younger children. It is important to have, though, to build homework habits and discipline.
  • The best way to study for people is by writing things down. It is much more effective than simply rereading something.

Ann Dolin’s Recharge Round

  1. Share with us how you believe your mindset affects your life? Ann tries to wake up grateful everyday. She always makes sure to greet everyone and walk into her work with a smile.
  2. What do you do daily to bring Energy into your life? She tries to take things off of her to-do list that require a lot of detail and save them for later. Then she prioritizes tasks based on what is easy or what can be done with others.
  3. Share the number one connection that has made the biggest impact on your life? The principal of the school she worked at said that she was definitely a leader and should go back to school to get a certificate for teaching administration.
  4. What advice has Influenced you the most in your life? She was told to look and ask for help early on when having problems so that things would go smoothly, and she’d get good advice.
  5. Recommend a book and share why you love it? How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish
  6. Define in one sentence or less, what legacy you want to leave on the world?  I want to make a difference in the lives of kids through 1 on 1 instruction.
