Show Notes:

  • When Michael was young, he applied his interests in design and branding.
  • He learned a lot when he started consulting in marketing and went to Japan to open a branch for his company.
    • He helped Japanese businesses better understand how they could market to Americans.
  • Michael believes that people don’t take the time to really listen to a new culture and language which makes it seem tougher to learn than it actually is.
    • Asks questions and listen. It helps you learn.
    • You can learn far more by listening than by speaking.
  • How can I turn this negative into a positive?
    • You’re always going to have challenges.
    • Shift your perspective.
  • Beginner consultants go too broad.
    • You have to take your skills and knowledge and find a niche.
  • A client is not paying you on your hours. They hire you because they have a problem and want to find an outcome.
    • What’s the value of what the customer wants?
  • Get clear on where you’re spending your time.
    • What are you doing that isn’t valuable or enjoyable?
  • Just because you can do something faster doesn’t mean that it’s more cost effective for you to do it.

Michael Zipursky’s Recharge Round

  1. What habit do you think has lead to success in your life? Michaels biggest habits are commitment and consistency. When you commit to something that is meaningful to you, you don’t give up on it.
  2. What’s the simple positive action that you take each day to move forward to achieve your goals? He practices gratitude when he wakes up every morning. Michael also asks himself what is the one priority item he wants to get done everyday?
  3. What’s your biggest life lesson and what have you learned from it? Life is about perspective. Those who struggle freeze when they hit a problem, but Michael approaches challenging situations by accepting what’s coming and then asking how he can approach it from a different perspective.
