John Stanley

John is an advisor to major donors and strategic grant-makers who want to do the most good with their currencies. He’s also the author of Connected for Good: A Gameplan for a Generous Life and the creator of the Generosity Gameplan™. This is a step-by-step process for people of means and substance who seek to create real change using a new approach to generosity. John is also a consultant who provides management services to donors, foundations, and nonprofits that want to increase their impact by giving from the heart.

John’s goal is to bring generous people to a destination where each act of generosity comes from the true desires of their heart; where relationships are built an inch wide and a mile deep; where strengths of skills and character are spent from an inexhaustible well of care; and where giving financial and material resources feels like sharing from an abundance rather than giving from what is leftover.

John has served some of the nation’s most generous families and the nonprofits they care about through The Legacy Group, a consulting and management firm he founded in 1999. He is also a grant-maker himself, giving through and serving his family’s foundation as a trustee.

Show Notes:

  • Generosity has been hijacked by fundraising principles.
    • There is a “You have the money. We need it. So give it to us.” kind of attitude.
    • Transactional giving is not very satisfying and not sustainable.
  • John has identified three gaps in generosity:
    1. The action gap is when we’re saying that it’s just not the right time to be generous.
    2. The accumulation gap is when we say we just don’t have enough of x to be generous.
    3. The gratification gap is when we think “is this all there is to being generous?”
  • What kind of gap are you living in?
  • The generosity game plan begins with a giving interest inventory.
    • Identify three areas that you are interested in giving in.
  • John believes there are three currencies of generosity.
    1. Connections
    2. Strengths
      • Only give away what you’re best at.
    3. Resources
  • Let your money and resources follow your heart.
  • Doing more is not necessarily more.
  • In the past two years, John has identified a fourth generosity gap: the tribal gap.
    • We give within our tribes regardless of where the most essential needs are.
  • With the fourth generosity gap comes a fourth generosity currency: the generous spirit.
    • The generous spirit means that we give other people the benefit of the doubt.
  • The freshest view of the generosity game plan has four questions:
    1. What am I good at?
    2. What am I for?
    3. Where’s there a need?
    4. How can I help?
  • Start where you are, use what you have and do what you can do.

John Stanley’s Recharge Round

  1. What habit do you think has lead to success in your life? John prays, works, then rests.
  2. What’s the simple positive action that you take each day to move forward to achieve your goals? Focus on what you’re for rather than what you’re against.
  3. What’s your biggest life lesson and what have you learned from it? Discover what wants to happen and help it.
